Basic Skills classes teach the FUNdamentals of ice skating and provides the best foundation for figure skating, hockey, and speed skating. The six progressive levels introduce forward and backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, and turns. (If you have taken some basic skills classes in the past, check out the LTS Skills Review.)
Adult 1-6
The Adult curriculum is designed for both beginning and experienced adult skaters who wish to improve their skating skills. The skills in these levels help promote physical fitness and improve balance and coordination, while teaching proper skating techniques.
Aspire
Aspire is a bridge program to our figure skating club. It is comprised of a variety of progressive skating skills, transitions, spins and jumps, and other disciplines within skating like dance, synchro, competition, and theater on ice, giving the skater a strong foundation in all the opportunities skating offers.

Information for parents and students
- Group lessons are on the Indoor Ice Rink unless otherwise specified. Please meet your coach off-ice at this first class. Look for your group's class postings around the edge of the rink. We have reformatted the classes this season: classes will be 30 minutes of instruction + 15 min shared practice ice in Fall/Spring or 10 min dedicated practice ice in Winter 1/2.
- Remember to arrive 15 minutes before the lesson start time.
- Wear gloves and a hat and a couple of layers of clothes (or have them available if the weather is warm outside).
- Bring a towel to wipe the ice off of your skate blades after your lesson.
- Get your skates sharpened at Glacier Ice Rink or Hockeywolf before your first lesson
- Helmets are highly recommended for all beginning skaters.
- Rental Skates:
- Available at the Glacier Ice Rink skate shop. Skates are not included in the class fee. The rink will be offering punch cards for skate rentals this season, $20 for 10 rentals.
- We do recommend that you buy your own skates for lessons as the quality of rental skates and their sharpening varies day by day. Hockeywolf (2621 Brooks St, 406-830-3397) is a good resource for new and used hockey and figure skates. We will also be holding periodic "skate swaps" throughout the year during Learn to Skate.
- Please make it a point to stop in at the Registration Desk for class updates. Beginner groups will also receive name tags at the desk on the first day of lessons. Please keep your badge for the duration of the session and hand it back in on the last day of class.
- Skaters should practice their skating moves at least 1 hour per week outside of class. Check www.glaciericerink.com for the public skate schedule. You can also purchase punch cards and memberships for public skate through Glacier Ice Rink.
- Skaters who have passed Basic Skills Levels 3 and up who are looking to progress at a faster rate should consider joining the figure skating club, getting private lessons, and/or participating in our Skating School program. Come and see us at the Registration Table for more information.
- Please review the LTS Orientation page from USFS.
If the program fee poses a financial hardship, please consider applying for a MFSC need-based scholarship.
